Ross Valliant and Cathy Shane – 2019

Inducted November 2019 Nominated by Murray Pearson

Ross and Cathy joined the HCC in the mid-90’s, coming to us from the Pakenham CC, where they had curled and got to meet HCC members through our curling community. They were instrumental in organizing and promoting the interclub rivalry we enjoyed for several years with Pakenham CC, where we competed annually for the ‘pink pig’, the symbol of curling supremacy between our clubs. Their team spirit was evident even then as they played and cheered on their friends and competitors from both clubs.

Cathy served as our HCC President for two years, as well as serving on various Board positions and committees. Her competency at managing meetings and her organizational skills were evident as she navigated and resolved the issues of the day. Her experience with the City of Ottawa and her negotiating skills enabled HCC to successfully implement a favourable solution to outstanding taxation issues.

As many will know, Ross has been a promoter and enthusiastic supporter of curling in Carp and the area. He took the initiative to establish criteria for the Honourary Membership award, as well as donating HM plaques for successful candidates. He is well known for his sense of humour, his terrible puns that keep everyone laughing or groaning, but best known for his development and delivery of the annual Mad Hatter spiel, which he and Cathy ran for several years. His horse races and jokes have been a huge hit with our members, making this one of HCC’s best and most popular bonspiels.   Ross and Cathy both curled in HCC leagues and outside the club where they were both well known for their sportsmanship, helping bring recognition for the HCC community. They have been true ambassadors for the club, showing strong leadership in their commitments and contributions as members, Cathy as a member of the Board of Directors and both as willing volunteers for many HCC events.
