Results from 2023 Brokerlink-OVCA Junior SuperSpiel

The 2023 Brokerlink-OVCA Junior SuperSpiel was held November 3-5 in Ottawa. Three teams from Huntley competed in the event that included teams from around the world. Reports from two teams are included below, while the third team’s report – Team Stoddart – will be added to the post when it becomes available.

U18 Team Davis (Men’s bracket) (As reported by Geoff Reid)

This was the boys first time entering a high level U20 international competition. The goals Fred set out for them was to win at least one game, gain experience at a higher level of competition and not give up any big ends. They checked all the boxes. The only game they gave up more than two points was in game number one against the Swiss Junior National team (who won the whole event) where they gave up three on an incredible triple take out made by the Swiss. The game that we won 6-0 they never had hammer and stole a point every end for six ends (I have never seen that before)

They played a total of five games over the two days playing teams from the USA, Switzerland, two from Quebec and one from Ottawa and attended the players banquet Friday night. They did an outstanding job representing the Club in good gamesmanship, fair play and presented the international teams with gift bags and a club pin. With more training, support from the club and ice time these boys could further excel in their development.

The team’s next event will be the provincial qualifiers at the start of December.

Team Frlan (Women’s bracket) (As reported by Brian Norman)

Team Frlan had an impressive weekend, reaching the semi-finals of the Brokerlink OVCA Super Spiel here in Ottawa. Unfortunately, they were defeated in the semi-final by Team Plett, the reigning U18 and U20 national champions from Alberta. This event provided a valuable opportunity for the team to compete against elite teams from both Canada and the United States.

Katrina, Erika, Sam and Lauren want to extend their gratitude to their dedicated coach, Andy Broder, for his unwavering support and commitment. They are also thankful for the overwhelming encouragement they received from the Huntley Curling Club’s membership.
